Hour 24: Scott Pruett Makes History At Rolex 24 At Daytona
Scott Pruett tied Hurley Haywood’s record with his fifth overall victory in the 51st Rolex 24 Daytona on Sunday. Juan Pablo Montoya crossed the finish line in the No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi Racing BMW/Riley 21.922 seconds ahead of Max Angelelli and the No. 10 Velocity Worldwide Corvette DP.
Both Montoya and Angelelli pitted for late splashes of fuel as the No. 01 completed a dominating day-to-night-to-day run. Pruett and Montoya won with Memo Rojas and Charlie Kimball.
Alex Job Racing gave Audi its first victory in the Rolex 24 and in the Rolex Sports Car Series. Filipe Albuquerque used a late splash of fuel in the No. 24 Audi R8 GRAND-AM to finish 1.476 seconds clear of Rene Rast in the No. 52 APR Motorsport Audi.
Albuquerque drove with Dion von Moltke, Oliver Jarvis and Edoardo Mortara for AJR’ first Rolex 24 win since 1999. The No. 69 AIM Motorsport FXDD Racing Ferrari 458 was third.
Napleton Racing made history as the first winner in the new GX class. Jim Norman, pole-winner Shane Lewis, David Donohue and Nelson Canache teamed in the No. 16 Porsche Cayman that won by 10 laps.
Darryl O’Young, Daniel Rogers, James Clay, Seth Thomas and Karl Thomson were second in the No. 22 Bullet Racing Porsche Cayman.
Hour 23: Caution Creates Traffic Jam For The Rolex 24 At Daytona Lead
The final hour of the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona is setting up to be a dogfight. A full-course caution 23 hours in bunched up the leading Daytona Prototypes with Juan Pablo Montoya in the No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi Racing BMW/Riley ahead of AJ Allmendinger in the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Ford/Riley.
The two battled back and forth following an early yellow flag near the end of the hour. At the time of the yellow, the top four cars were within four seconds.
GT was just as close. Rene Rast in the No. 52 APR Motorsport Audi R8 GRAND-AM led a group of seven cars on the lead lap. He was 1.161 seconds clear of Anthony Lazzaro in the No. 69 Ferrari F458 from AIM Autosport FXDD. The pole-sitting No. 44 Magnus Racing Porsche GT3 was next in the queue with Richard Lietz at the wheel.
There was no change in GX as David Donohue continued to lead for Napleton Racing. The No. 16 Porsche Cayman was nine laps up on Seth Thomas and the No. 22 Bullet Racing Cayman.
Hour 22: Pruett Closes In On Record-Tying Rolex 24 Triumph at Daytona
One record is down in the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona. Scott Pruett may be on his way to tying another. Pruett led by 22 seconds in the No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi Racing BMW/Riley in the chase for a record-tying fifth overall victory in the great race. With 22 hours down, this year’s race broke the 2008 event’s record with 64 car lead changes.
Pruett, the pole-winner Thursday, led Marcus Ambrose in the hard-charging No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Ford/Riley. Max Angelleli was third the No. 10 Velocity Worldwide Corvette DP.
The GT battle remains anyone’s guess. Magnus Racing’s No. 44 Porsche GT3 had led throughout but the team’s pit strategy moved Rene Rast in the No. 52 APR Motorsport Audi R8 GRAND-AM into the lead during the pit stop cycle. Jeroen Bleekemolen was second for Alex Job Racing in the No. 23 Porsche GT3 but both cars were set to pit just past the 22-hour mark.
Shane Lewis and Napleton Racing remained in comfortable control of GX with a nine-lap lead for the No. 16 Porsche Cayman. Seth Thomas was second for Bullet Racing in the No. 22 Porsche Cayman.
Hour 21: Pruett Regains Lead With Three Hours Remaining in Rolex 24
Scott Pruett’s drive to a record-tying fifth overall victory in the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona continued with three hours left Sunday afternoon. Pruett went from fifth place in the No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi Racing BMW/Riley following a restart back to the race lead in just eight minutes. The overall pole-sitter, who pitted for a brake change during the most recent full-course caution, got under Ryan Hunter-Reay at the entry to NASCAR Turn 1 to return to the point again.
Hunter-Reay, in the No. 10 Velocity Worldwide Corvette DP, held second place by 0.106 seconds over Mike Rockenfeller in Action Express Racing’s No. 9 Corvette DP.
Andy Lally regained the GT lead for Magnus Racing during the race restart in the pole-sitting No. 44 Porsche GT3 and led Mark Wilkins in the No. 69 AIM Motorsport Team FXDD Ferrari 458. Alessandro Balzan ran third for Scuderia Corse Michelotto in the No. 63 Ferrari. The top seven cars in class remained on the lead lap.
Shane Lewis was back in the GX-leading No. 16 Porsche Cayman from Napleton Racing. Lewis, who won the class pole position, led by seven laps over James Clay in the No. 22 Porsche.
Hour 20: Rojas Ahead Of Six DPs On Lead Lap With Four Hours Remaining
With four hours left in the 51st Rolex 24 At Daytona, Memo Rojas led a group of six Daytona Prototypes on the lead lap in the opening race of the 2013 Rolex Sports Car Series. Rojas and the No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi Racing BMW/Riley led by 5.969 seconds over Ryan Hunter-Reay in Velocity Worldwide’s No. 9 Corvette DP.
Michael Shank Racing, looking for a repeat victory, ran third with Justin Wilson trailing by 24.359 seconds in the No. 60 Ford/Riley. The car made up seven laps in the overnight session thanks to timely wave-by periods and pit strategy.
Magnus Racing remained out front in GT with Andy Lally in the No. 44 Porsche GT3. Lally, in the pole-sitting entry, was 23.115 seconds clear of Mark Wilkins in AIM Autosport Team FXDD Ferrari 458. Edoardo Mortara, who challenged the Magnus Porsche in the early part of the hour, was third in Alex Job Racing’s Audi R8 GRAND-AM. Six cars were on the lead lap.
Napleton Racing kept cruising in GX with Nelson Canache holding a six-lap lead in the No. 16 Porsche Cayman. James Clay was second for Bullet Racing in his No. 22 Porsche Cayman.
Hour 19: Rojas In Command, Defending Winners Back On Lead Lap
Memo Rojas took over for Scott Pruett and remained in the lead in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, driving the No. 01 TELMEX/Target BMW/Riley.
“Long way to go,” said Pruett, who is seeking his fifth victory in the event.
The car to watch may be the No. 60 now driven by Justin Wilson. The defending race-winning No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Ford/Riley lost seven laps in the early going, but through pit strategy and wave-byes is back on the lead lap.
Jordan Taylor is second in the No. 10 Velocity Worldwide Corvette DP, with five cars on the lead lap.
Mark Wilkins is now leading GT in the No. 69 AIM Autosport Team FXDD Ferrari 458. The No. 30 MOMO/NGT Porsche GT3 began the hour leading in GT, but a cut left-front tire and resulting suspension tire put the car behind the wall with Kuba Giermaziak at the wheel.
Dr. Jim Norman is now driving the GX-leading No. 16 Napleton Racing Porsche Cayman, maintaining a five-lap lead over the Bullet Racing Porsche Cayman of James Clay.
Hour 18: Racing Resumes, Pruett Back Out Front
Racing resumed at 8:39 a.m. ET following a one-hour, 45-minute caution flag for fog.
Scott Pruett went back into the lead in the No. 01 TELMEX/Target BMW/Riley, 16.999 seconds ahead of Joao Barbosa in the No. 9 Action Express Corvette DP, Jordan Taylor in the No. 10 Velocity Worldwide Corvette DP and Richard Westbrook in the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP.
AJ Allmendinger managed to bring the defending race-winning No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Ford/Riley up to fifth place, one lap behind (after falling seven laps back in the early hours), while Alex Popow cut a right-front fire and fell off the lead lap in the No. 2 Starworks with Alex Popow Ford/Riley.
GT remains extremely competitive. Patrick Pilet currently leads in the No. 30 MOMO/NGT Porsche GT3, followed by the defending race-winning No. 44 Magnus Racing Porsche GT3 of Richard Lietz and the No. 24 Alex Job Racing Audi R8.
David Donohue is now driving the GX-leading No. 16 Napleton Racing Porsche Cayman, maintaining a four-lap lead over the Bullet Racing Porsche Cayman of Darryl O’Young.
Hour 17: Foggy Hour Keeps Rolex 24 Field Under Caution
Rolex 24 competitors spent the entire hour behind the safety car, although the fog is beginning to break up and racing is expected to resume shortly.
Ryan Dalziel took the overall lead during pit stops in the No. 2 Starworks with Alex Popow Ford/Riley, while Markus Winkelhock is now leading in GT driving the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing Audi R8. Shane Lewis continues to lead GX driving the No. 16 Napleton Racing Porsche Cayman, with Daniel Rogers in Bullet Racing’s No. 22 Cayman remaining four laps back.
Hour 16: Fog Slows Action; Angelelli Paces Five Cars on Lead Lap
While there is no call for rain in Sunday’s forecast (sunny and 74 degrees expected), Mother Nature threw a curve at Rolex 24 competitors at 6:55 a.m. ET when heavy fog rolled in and enveloped Daytona International Speedway, bringing out an extended caution.
Max Angelelli led five cars on the lead lap in the No. 10 Velocity Worldwide Corvette DP, followed by Ryan Dalziel in the No. 2 Starworks with Alex Popow Ford/Riley, Richard Westbrook in the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP, Mike Rockenfeller in the No. 9 Action Express Corvette DP, and Scott Pruett in the No. 01 TELMEX/Target BMW/Riley.
Defending Rolex Series GT champ Nick Longhi led in the No. 69 AIM Autosport Team FXDD Ferrari 458, followed by Olivier Beretta in the No. 63 Scuderia Corsa Michelotto Audi R8 and Markus Winkelhock in the No. 13 Run Bum Racing Audi R8.
Shane Lewis continues to lead GX driving the No. 16 Napleton Racing Porsche Cayman, with Seth Thomas in Bullet Racing’s No. 22 Cayman remaining four laps back.
Hour 15: Montoya Retains Lead, McMurray Brushes Wall
Jamie McMurray brushed the wall while speeding exiting pit road following a green flag pit stop, costing the No. 02 Target/TELMEX BMW/Riley seven laps. McMurray was running second behind teammate Juan Pablo Montoya when both cars pitted.
At the end of 15 hours, Montoya held an 11-second lead over Ryan Dalziel in the No. 2 Starworks with Alex Popow Ford/Riley, with Max Angelelli only .031 seconds behind in the No. 10 VelocityWorldWide Corvette DP.
Defending Rolex 24 GT winner Andy Lally regained the class lead in the No. 44 Magnus Racing Porcshe GT3, closely pressured by Nick Longhi in the No. 69 AIM Autosport Team FXDD Ferrari 458 and Matt Plumb in the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing Audi R8. Ironically, Longhi and Plumb co-drive for Rum Bum in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, finishing second Friday at Daytona.
In GX, Shane Lewis is now driving the No. 16 Napleton Racing Porsche Cayman , leading Seth Thomas in Bullet Racing’s No. 22 Cayman by four laps.
Hour 14: Ganassi Teammates McMurray, Montoya 1-2
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rivals Jamie McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya were running 1-2 at the end of 14 hours in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, with the No. 02 Target/TELMEX BMW/Riley leading the sister No. 01 TELMEX/Target entry by .504 seconds.
The Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates duo were chased by a trio of Corvettes, with five DPs on the lead lap. Oliver Gavin ran third in the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP, followed by Burt Frisselle in the No. 9 Action Express entry and Ryan Hunter-Reay in the No. 10 VelocityWorldWide Corvette.
Seven cars were running on the lead lap in GT, led by Mark Wilkins in the No. 69 AIM Autosport Team FXDD Ferrari 458. Dion von Moltke was six seconds back in the No. 24 Alex Job Racing Audi R8, followed by Matt Plumb in the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing Audi R8.
Napleton Racing continues to lead in GX,but Nelson Canache’s lead in the No. 16 Porsche Cayman has been cut from seven to two laps by Seth Thomas in Bullet Racing’s No. 22 Cayman.
Hour 13: Hunter-Reay, Biela Take Leads
Ryan Hunter-Reay took over the overall lead at the 13-hour mark of the Rolex 24 At Daytona in the No. 10 Velocity WorldWide Corvette DP, closely challenged by the No. 02 Target/TELMEX BMW Riley of Jamie McMurray. Six cars were running on the lead lap.
Frank Biela is out front in GT in the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing Audi R8, followed by Mark Wilkins in the No. 60 AIM Autosport Team FXDD Ferrari 458.
The lone incident of the hour saw Rubens Barrichello coast to a stop after losing the engine in the No. 21 Dener Motorsports Porsche GT3. That resulted in the car’s retirement after the team struggled with engine problems throughout the event.
Napleton Racing continues to lead in GX, with Nelson Canache now at the wheel of the No. 16 Porsche Cayman. Seth Thomas is second in Bullet Racing’s No. 22 Cayman, seven laps back.
Hour 12: Dario Franchitti Maintains Steady Lead At Rolex 24 At Daytona
Dario Franchitti led at the halfway point of the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona on Sunday morning as Chip Ganassi Racing continued its steady run. Franchitti in the No. 02 Target/TELMEX BMW/Riley led Ryan Hunter-Reay and Velocity Worldwide’s Corvette DP by 32.952 seconds. The top seven cars were within 92 seconds and on the lead lap in the first race of the Rolex Sports Car Series’ 2013 season.
Allan McNish was chasing Hunter-Reay in third place with Starworks’ No. 2 BMW/Riley. The Starworks entry was the only car to have significant time out front in the first 12 hours.
GT continued to be anyone’s guess, as well. The top five cars were within 74 seconds with Alessandro Pier Guidi leading in the No. 63 Scuderia Corse Michelotto Ferrari 458. The pole-sitting No. 44 Magnus Racing Porsche GT3 ran second with Nicolas Armindo driving. He had an eight-second gap over Edoardo Mortara in Alex Job Racing’s No. 24 Audi R8 GRAND-AM.
Napleton Racing’s advantage in GX grew to seven laps with Jim Norman at the wheel of the No. 16 Porsche Cayman. James Clay was second in Bullet Racing’s No. 22 Porsche, which moved past Eric Foss and BGB Motorsports’ No. 38 Cayman; it lost time having to replace a rear axle.
Hour 11: Nearly Half-Way To The Finish At Rolex 24 At Daytona
Dario Franchitti led a tight top-five at the 11-hour mark of the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona early Sunday morning for Target/TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing. The two Ganassi cars dominated the opening half of the race, and Franchitti took advantage of a mistake by Charlie Kimbell, who missed the backstretch chicane, and turned it into a 4.839-second advantage.
Joao Barbosa ran second for Action Express Racing in the No. 9 Corvette DP with Sebastien Bourdais third in the No. 2 Starworks Ford/Riley. The top six cars were within 22.275 seconds as the race approached the halfway point.
Magnus Racing’s Richard Lietz in the No. 44 Porsche GT3 led GT, but he was fighting off Alessandro Pier Guidi in the No. 63 Scuderia Corse Michelotto Ferrari 458. The two were separated by 4.916 seconds with Edoardo Mortara in third behind the wheel of Alex Job Racing’s No. 24 Audi R8 GRAND-AM.
Dr. Jim Norman led GX in the No. 16 Porsche Cayman from Napleton Racing. The team held the point for the last several hours with Lee Davis second in BGB Motorsports’ No. 38 Porsche Cayman.
Hour 10: Dario Franchitti Keeps Chip Ganassi Racing In Lead At Rolex 24 At Daytona
Dario Franchitti moved to the front shortly after the fifth restart of the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona on Sunday morning in the No. 02 Target/TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing BMW/Riley. Just before the 10-hour mark, Franchitti restarted the race second – after the No. 77 Doran Racing Ford/Dallara stopped on track with no power – but wasted little time getting around teammate Charlie Kimbell for the lead.
Kimbell, who started his first stint in the race lead during the caution, was two seconds behind in the No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi Racing BMW/Riley. Joao Barbosa was trying to close in Action Express Racing’s No. 9 Corvette DP and sat 3.640 seconds behind Franchitti.
Richard Lietz got the No. 44 Magnus Racing Porsche GT3 back into the GT lead, which is where the car began the race. The battle in class was extremely tight with four cars within 0.944 seconds. Lietz had 0.121 seconds over Christopher Haase in the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing Audi R8 GRAND-AM. Patrick Pilet, another Porsche works pilot, was another half-second behind in the No. 30 NGT Motorsport Porsche.
David Donohue kept Napleton Racing in the GX lead, where the No. 16 Porsche Cayman has been most of the race. Ryan Eversley ran second for BGB Motorsports in the No. 38 Porsche Cayman, but he was three laps down.
Hour 9: Chip Ganassi Racing Stays In Front At Rolex 24 At Daytona
Chip Ganassi Racing continued its run at the front of the field after nine hours of the 51stt Rolex 23 at Daytona. Pole-sitter Scott Pruett led in his No. 01 TELMEX/Target BMW/Riley by 2.192 seconds over teammate Scott Dixon in the No. 02 Target/TELMEX entry. The two Ganassi cars were the dominant cars in the opening hours with the No. 01 leading the majority of laps.
The top six Daytona Prototypes remained on the lead lap. Christian Fittipaldi ran third in the No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP.
Sean Edwards moved the No. 30 NGT Motorsport Porsche GT3 to the front in GT. He enjoyed a 19.5-second lead over Oliver Jarvis in Alex Job Racing’s No. 24 Audi R8 GRAND-AM as the two German marques duked it out in class. Markus Winkelhock was third for Rum Bum Racing in the No. 13 Audi.
GX continued to be the Napleton Racing Show with David Donohue setting the pace in the No. 16 Porsche Cayman. He was three laps clear of Ryan Eversley in the No. 38 Porsche.
Hour 8: Scott Pruett Jumps Ahead At Rolex 24 At Daytona
After eight hours of the 51st Rolex at Daytona, Scott Pruett was back where he started: out front. The No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi Racing BMW/Riley led under full-course caution with 16 hours left at Daytona International Raceway. Kevin Estre went off at Turn 5 in the No.
18 Nuehiner Motorsports America Porsche and could not get the car going, necessitating the yellow.
Pruett led from Max Angelelli in the No. 10 Velocity Motorsports Corvette DP and the No. 02 Target/TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing BMW/Riley of Scott Dixon. The top six Daytona Prototypes were shown on the lead lap.
Filipe Albuquergue led GT for Alex Job Racing and Audi in the No. 24 Audi R8 GRAND-AM. Three manufacturers were in the top-three: Alessandro Balzan in the No. 63 Scuderia Corsa Michelotto Ferrari 458 was second, followed by Jon Potter in Magnus Racing’s class pole-sitting No. 44 Porsche GT3.
Shane Lewis continued to lead GX for Napleton Racing in the No. 16 Porsche Cayman. He was three laps ahead of Ryan Everlsey in the No. 38 BGB Motorsports Porsche Cayman.
Hour 7: Close Battle For Overall Lead At Rolex 24 At Daytona
The seven-hour mark in the Rolex 24 at Daytona saw a fierce battle for the overall lead in the race’s 51st running. Juan Pablo Montoya regained the race lead in his No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi Racing BMW/Riley by getting around Starworks’ Ryan Dalziel in a run past the start-finish line with 17 hours left.
Dalziel in the No. 2 Ford/Riley had been holding off Montoya for a number of laps after the race’s third full-course caution. The duo led a group of seven Daytona Prototypes that were within 9.819 seconds. Max Angelelli ran third for Velocity Motorsports and the No. 10 Corvette DP.
The top nine GT cars were within 51 seconds after seven hours. Filipe Albuquergue led for Alex Job Racing in the No. 24 Audi R8 GRAND AM by 4.054 seconds over Rene Rast in the No. 52 APR Motorsport Audi. Andy Lally was third for Magnus Racing in the No. 44 Porsche GT.
Shane Lewis moved Napleton Racing’s No. 16 Porsche Cayman back to the front of the GX field. He was three laps ahead of John Tecce in BGB Motorsports’ No. 38 Porsche Cayman.
Hour 6: Juan Pablo Montoya Continues Lead At Rolex 24 At Daytona
Juan Pablo Montoya is showing no sign of slowing down one-quarter of the way through the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona. He led after six hours Saturday night in the No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi Racing BMW/Riley and set the fastest lap of the race twice in the fifth hour.
Montoya, whose best lap was a 1:41.327, led Ryan Hunter-Reay and the No. 10 Velocity Corvette DP by 14.621 seconds as the pole-sitting car continued its early domination at Daytona. Another Corvette DP sat third – the No. 9 Action Express of Mike Rockenfeller, who was 47 seconds behind Montoya.
Mark Wilkins led a frantic fight in GT with a 4.863-second lead in class driving the No. 69 AIM Autosport Team FXDD Ferrari 458. He was ahead of Marco Frezza in the No. 63 Scuderia Corsa Michelotto Ferrari, who had his hands full with Damien Faulkner in Alex Job Racing’s No. 23 Porsche GT3.
The top 10 cars were running on the lead lap.
In GX, Nelson Canache had the No. 16 Napleton Racing Porsche Cayman back out front in a back-and-forth fight with Jeff Mosing. The No. 38 BGB Motorsports Porsche trailed by a minute with Seth Thomas and the No. 22 Bullet Racing Porsche was two laps down.
Hour 5: Juan Pablo Montoya Proves Potent At Rolex 24 At Daytona
The car that started out front in the Rolex 24 at Daytona continued to lead after five hours. Juan Pablo Montoya in the No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi BMW/Riley moved past Ryan Hunter-Reay and the Velocity Motorsports Corvette DP just prior to the five-hour mark Saturday night. Jamie McMurray in the No. 02 BMW/Riley had passed Hunter-Reay minutes earlier for first place but was called in for a 30-second penalty after the car ran over its own equipment during a pit stop.
Burt Frisselle in the No. 9 Action Express Corvette DP ran third, 13.445 seconds back of Montoya.
Magnus Racing led GT after starting from the class pole, as well. Nicolas Armindo in the No. 44 Porsche GT3 was 3.426 seconds ahead of Dion von Moltke and Alex Job Racing’s Audi R8 GRAND-AM. AJR’s No. 23 Porsche GT3 was third with Damien Faulkner a further 0.289 seconds back.
Nelson Canache led GX by 1.029 seconds in Napleton Racing’s No. 16 Porsche Cayman. Eric Foss was giving chase in BGB Motorsports’ No. 38 Porsche Cayman.
Hour 4: McNish Ahead After Four Hours Of Rolex 24 At Daytona
Allan McNish, looking for his first career victory in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, led the 51st edition of the great race Saturday night after four hours for Starworks Motorsport. The Scot in the No. 2 Ford/Riley led Velocity Motorsports’ Jordan Taylor in the No. 10 Corvette DP by 43 seconds. Jamie McMurray ran third for Target/TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing in the No. 02 BMW/Riley.
Alessandro Pier Guidi led in GT for Scuderia Corsa Michelotto in the No. 63 Ferrari 458 by 3.747 seconds over the pole-sitting Magnus Racing Porsche GT3. Nicolas Armindo had just taken over for Richard Lietz in the No. 44 Magnus entry. The first of the Audi R8 GRAND-AM entries ran third in class with Edoardo Mortara behind the wheel of the No. 24 Alex Job Racing car.
Porsche Napleton Racing continued its domination in GX with a one-lap lead for Dr. Jim Norman in the No. 16 Porsche Cayman. Eric Foss was second for BGB Racing with James Clay third for Bullet Racing; they both were driving Porsche Caymans, as well.
Hour 3: Close Action Closes Out Daytona Daylight At Rolex 24
Starworks’ Motorsport led seven Daytona Prototypes on the lead lap after three hours of the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona on Saturday as darkness enveloped Daytona International Raceway. Sebastian Bourdais, in the No. 2 Ford/Riley, led TELMX/Target Chip Ganassi’s Memo Rojas in the pole-sitting No. 01 BMW/Riley by just 0.214 seconds.
Dario Franchitti and the No. 02 Target/TELMEX Chip Ganassi BMW/Riley was 4.6 seconds from the lead in a race that so far has featured just one full-course caution period.
Olivier Beretta continued to lead GT for Scuderia Corse Michelotto in the No. 63 Ferrari 458. The No. 63 Ferrari was 13 seconds clear of John Edwards in the No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GS.R. Oliver Jarvis was another 1.1 seconds back in Alex Job Racing’s Audi R8 GRAND-AM.
Porsches held the top three positions in GX. David Donohue continued to lead the class as it has most of the day. The No. 16 Porsche Napleton Racing Porsche Cayman led by two laps over Eric Foss in BGB Motorsports’ Porsche Cayman.
Hour 2: Pruett Holds Narrow Lead Over Angelelli In Second Hour At Rolex 24 At Daytona
Scott Pruett continued to lead the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona after two hours, albeit a narrow advantage over Max Angelelli. The pole-sitting No. 01 Ganassi BMW/Riley led the No. 10 Velocity Motorsports Corvette DP by 2.182 seconds with 22 hours left. The top three cars were within 2.6 seconds as Sebastien Bourdais ran third in the No. 2 Starworks Ford/Riley.
Olivier Beretta led GT for Ferrari and Scuderia Corsa Michelotto. The Monte Carlo driver in the No. 63 Ferrari 458 was a second ahead of Anthony Lazzaro in the No. 69 Aim Motorsport Ferrari. John Edwards ran third for Steven Motorsports in the No. 57 Camaro GT.R.
David Donohue had a 32-second lead in GX for Porsche Napleton Racing in the No. 16 Porsche Cayman. BGB Motorsports’ Darryl O’Young was second, and another Cayman – Lee Davis in the No. 38 BGB Motorsports entry – was third.
Hour 1: Pruett Leads, Shank Suffers Problems In Opening Hour At Rolex 24 At Daytona
Scott Pruett led after the first hour of the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona as the field cycled through pit stops in a caution-free opening 60 minutes at Daytona International Raceway. Pruett, who started from pole position, had his No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi BMW/Riley nearly nine seconds ahead of teammate Scott Dixon. Michael Valiante in the No. 6 Michael Shank Racing Ford/Riley was 18 seconds back of Pruett. Meanwhile the defending Rolex 24 champion No. 60 Michael Shank Racing entry lost seven laps with a broken tie rod.
In GT, Andy Lally led for defending champion Magnus Racing in the No. 44 Porsche 911 GT3. He was 1.274 seconds clear of Filipe Albuquergue in the No. 24 Alex Job Racing Audi R8 GRAND-AM. Anthony Lazzaro ran third in the No. 69 AIM Autosport Ferrari 458.
Shane Lewis and the pole-sitting No. 16 Porsche Napleton Racing Porsche Cayman led GX by 34 seconds over Darryl O’Young in the No. 22 Bullet Racing Porsche.
