The Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge is now in its fifth year and has well established itself in the motorsport industry as arguably the largest prize on offer in European motorsport.
The Sunoco Daytona Challenge is a competition between racers in selected Sunoco-fuelled race championships in Europe. The winner of the Challenge receives a free race seat in a Daytona Prototype, with a top team, in the Rolex 24 At Daytona and pre-event testing in the US to familiarize themselves with the car.
The point system includes; 100 points for a victory, 85 points for second and 75 for a third down through to 5 points for tenth place. In addition, 20 points will be awarded to both the driver who wins pole position and the driver who sets the fastest lap. The driver who accumulates the highest average point score (the total points will be divided by the number of races in each championship) will be awarded the seat in the Rolex 24 At Daytona.
Last year's Challenge was won by 2012 SPEED EuroSeries champion Ivan Bellarosa. Italian Bellarosa raced with Starworks Motorsport and drove their #8 DP along with team-mates Scott Mayer, Brendon Hartley and Jan Charouz. The team ran in twelfth position for most of its race before its fair share of gremlins. The fatal blow was a meeting with a wall, which caused the charger's retirement on lap 441.
The 2014 Sunoco Daytona Challenge is open to drivers in the following European Sunoco fuelled series: MSA British Endurance Championship, SPEED EuroSeries, Radical Masters EuroSeries and the Radical SR3 Challenge.
Launched two years ago the Sunoco GRAND-AM 200 Challenge gives more Sunoco fuelled racers the chance to race at Daytona. The ultimate prize is a race-seat in the Continental Series GS class in the GRAND-AM 200 race - at the same race weekend as the Rolex 24. The points are awarded exactly as per the Sunoco Daytona Challenge, meaning that the racer gains points for pole position, fastest lap and race result. Series that are eligible for the 2014 Sunoco GRAND-AM 200 Challenge are: Dutch Supercar Challenge, F3 Cup, GT Cup, Radical Clubman's Cup, MINI Challenge, Britcar Production Sportscars and the Britcar Production Cup.
