Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -Now in its third year the Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge has gone from strength to strength and is arguably the largest prize on offer in British motorsport.

The Sunoco Daytona Challenge is a competition between racers in selected Sunoco-fuelled race championships in Europe. The winner of the Challenge receives a free race seat in a Daytona Prototype with a top team in the Rolex 24 At Daytona and pre-event testing at Virginia International Speedway and Daytona to familiarise themselves with the car.

The point system includes; 100 points for a victory, 75 points for second and 55 for a third down through to tenth place. In addition, 20 points will be awarded to both the driver who wins pole position and the driver who sets the fastest lap. The driver who accumulates the highest average point score (the total points will be divided by the number of races in each championship) will be awarded the seat in the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

The 2011 Challenge was won by Ross Kaiser, who just snatched victory over Red Bull sponsored British F3 driver Jean-Eric Vergne. Kaiser raced with the Doran Racing team in their #77 Office Depot Ford Dallara however unfortunately the car had to retire in the 13th hour due to two major race incidents.

The 2012 Sunoco Daytona Challenge is open to drivers in the Avon Tyres British GT Championship, Cooper Tires F3 International and the Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship. Drivers in these series alone are likely to be able to handle a DP (Daytona Prototype) at plus 190mph on the famed 31° banking at Daytona International Speedway.

Anglo American Oil Company is the European and Middle Eastern distributor for Sunoco and promotes the challenge; it is provided by Daytona International Speedway and supported by GRAND-AM.
